The oldest Catholic Parish in the USA began here in 1565 as Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles arrived with several hundred people, including Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, chaplain of Menendez’ fleet.
The Great Cross of St. Augustine is stainless steel, stands 208 feet high, and was erected for the 400th anniversary of the first recorded Catholic Mass.
It is free to walk the grounds and visit the Old Mission Cemetery with graves from the 1600′s to 1888.
